Hindalco Drives Safer, Lighter Aftermarket Solutions

ACMA Automechanika 2026 has once again underscored its position as India’s largest and most influential automotive aftermarket platform; bringing OEMs, component makers and solution providers together to shape the next phase of industry growth. Among the key voices at the show is Hindalco Industries, which is reinforcing its role not just as a material supplier but as a technology and innovation partner to the automotive ecosystem.

Dr. Gautam Wagle, VP and Lead – Application Development

Representing the Hindalco Innovation Centre, Dr. Gautam Wagle, Vice President and Lead – Application Development, highlighted the company’s focus on quality, co-creation and combating counterfeit materials in the aftermarket.

“Hindalco has always been a trusted material supplier,” Dr. Wagle said. “In the aftermarket, one of the biggest concerns is spurious or counterfeit materials. Our message here is clear; we offer reliable, high-quality aluminium solutions and we partner with customers to engineer components that are safe, durable and brand-worthy.”

Designing with Aluminium in Mind

A recurring theme in Dr. Wagle’s address was the need to rethink how aluminium is perceived and used in automotive applications. Contrary to the common misconception that aluminium is soft, he stressed that performance depends on alloy design, processing and application engineering.

“It is a myth that aluminium is a weak material,” Dr. Wagle explained. “If you design the component with aluminium in mind, and if you process and handle it correctly, you can achieve the same performance, if not better, than traditional materials.”

In two-wheelers, aluminium is increasingly being used in safety-critical applications such as ABS brake system components. These require high precision machining, strength and heat resistance. Hindalco has worked with suppliers to develop alloys tailored for such demanding applications, ensuring reliability without compromising on weight.

Similarly, front fork tubes and battery enclosures for electric two-wheelers represent areas where material innovation and surface treatments play a crucial role. Lightweight battery boxes not only reduce overall vehicle mass but also improve energy efficiency and range.

Moving to passenger vehicles, the rapid growth of electric vehicles has accelerated the adoption of aluminium, particularly in battery enclosures and structural components. Hindalco supports OEM suppliers through its expertise in extrusions, rolled products and joining technologies.

“The EV transition has intensified the focus on lightweighting,” Dr. Wagle noted. “Our strength lies not just in supplying aluminium, but in understanding how to join, process and integrate it into complex assemblies.”

In commercial vehicles, the benefits of aluminium extend beyond weight reduction. Lighter structures enable higher payload capacity and improved fuel efficiency. Hindalco has been involved in developing aluminium-based bulkers and sheet applications that demonstrate durability while delivering operational advantages. “Lightweight solutions improve braking, load carrying and overall performance,” Dr. Wagle said. “When designed properly, aluminium enhances both efficiency and safety.”

Enabling a Stronger and Safer Aftermarket

While Hindalco’s engagement with OEMs is well established, its communication at ACMA Automechanika 2026 is equally focused on the aftermarket. The company aims to ensure that component manufacturers and distributors have access to certified, high-quality materials that reduce the risk of counterfeit parts entering the supply chain. “The conversation should not stop at whether a material exists,” Dr. Wagle emphasised. “We are here to innovate and to ask; are you willing to co-create with us? If a grade or property is not available, we are prepared to develop it.”

This collaborative approach reflects Hindalco’s broader strategy of moving up the value chain. Rather than acting solely as a supplier of metal, the company positions itself as a solutions provider that supports design optimization, surface engineering and process integration.

Automotive remains a strategic focus area for Hindalco, both in India and globally. The Innovation Centre works closely with customers to address challenges related to durability, scalability and cost efficiency, especially in a market where quick part deliveries and reliability are critical. “Each stakeholder in the aftermarket faces similar challenges; cost pressures, performance expectations and the need for scale,” Dr. Wagle observed. “We have the capability and the commitment to work together to engineer better futures.”

As the Indian automotive industry continues to modernize, material science will play a pivotal role in shaping safer and more sustainable mobility solutions. Through its presence at ACMA Automechanika 2026, Hindalco is reinforcing that aluminium, when engineered thoughtfully, can be central to that transformation.

With innovation, partnership and quality at the forefront, Dr. Wagle’s message is clear; the future of the aftermarket lies in collaborative development and advanced material solutions that raise the benchmark for performance and trust.
