Maruti Suzuki becomes First Carmaker in India to Cross Three Crore Domestic Sales

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has crossed a landmark milestone by achieving cumulative domestic sales of three crore passenger vehicles — the first automobile manufacturer in India to do so. The feat has been achieved in just 42 years, reflecting Maruti Suzuki’s market leadership and the trust it continues to enjoy among Indian customers.

The company took 28 years and two months to reach its first one crore units, then accelerated to the next one crore in just seven years and five months. The most recent one crore units were achieved at an even faster pace, in only six years and four months, underscoring the rapid expansion of the Indian passenger vehicle market and Maruti Suzuki’s strong brand pull.

Among the three crore vehicles sold, the Alto leads as the highest-selling model with over 47 lakh units, followed by Wagon R with more than 34 lakh units and Swift with over 32 lakh units. Newer models like Brezza and Fronx have also quickly made it to the top 10 list.

Maruti Suzuki’s journey began with the iconic Maruti 800, handed over to its first customer on 14 December 1983. Today, the company offers more than 170 variants across 19 models in its portfolio.

Commenting on the achievement, Mr. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said that the milestone reflects the trust of three crore Indian customers and added that with car penetration still only about 33 vehicles per 1,000 people, the company’s mission to democratise mobility is far from complete. He reaffirmed that Maruti Suzuki will continue to focus on expanding access to mobility while contributing to the economy and the environment.
