Piaggio Launches Apé WavE to Take on India’s Affordable Electric Three-Wheeler Market

Piaggio Vehicles has expanded its electric passenger vehicle lineup in India with the launch of the Apé WavE, a new electric three-wheeler aimed at the rapidly growing affordable passenger EV segment. 2,55,000-ex showroom Pune, the Apé WavE is available through Piaggio dealerships across India and is designed primarily for shared mobility operations, fixed-route transportation, and short-distance passenger applications in urban and semi-urban areas.

The Apé WavE is powered by a 5.4 kWh battery pack with a peak motor output of 3 kW and 25 Nm of torque, delivering a real-world operating range of approximately 90 km on a single charge. It has a maximum speed of 40 kmph and a gradeability of 19%, making it suited for varied road conditions typically encountered in Indian cities and towns. The battery charges fully in around 4.5 hours, keeping downtime low for drivers who depend on the vehicle for their daily livelihood.

Built on a full-metal body with monocoque architecture, the Apé WavE offers 180 mm of ground clearance and a passenger-focused suspension setup designed to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness levels while improving ride comfort. The spacious cabin and low acquisition and maintenance costs are positioned as key advantages for both individual drivers and fleet operators looking to maximise earning potential.

The launch continues Piaggio’s electric mobility journey in India, which began with the Apé E-City swappable model and has since evolved through the E-City FX, E-City Maxx, and E-City Ultra platforms. The Apé WavE represents the next step in that progression, targeting a segment of the market where affordability and operational reliability are the primary purchase drivers.

Mr. Diego Graffi, Chairman and Managing Director of Piaggio Vehicles, said the Apé WavE has been developed specifically to meet the needs of drivers seeking affordable ownership alongside superior comfort, safety, and operational reliability, and that it reflects the company’s understanding of Indian mobility requirements and its commitment to sustainable transportation and livelihood generation.

Mr. Amit Sagar, Executive Vice President of CV Domestic Business and Retail Finance at Piaggio Vehicles, added that the Apé WavE strikes an ideal balance between acquisition cost, operational savings, and passenger experience, and that its robust build quality, low maintenance needs, and strong ride comfort make it a compelling value proposition for drivers and fleet operators alike.
