Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Expands R&D Footprint with New Pune Facility

Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited has strengthened its research and development capabilities with the inauguration of a new wing at its Technology Centre Pune (TCP) in Baner, signalling a deeper commitment to local engineering and faster product development for both domestic and global markets.

With the new Baner wing, the company aims to further strengthen its long-term India strategy by investing in talent and infrastructure, while advancing work in connected technologies, electrification and cost-efficient engineering for global markets.

The new facility, spread across 33,000 sq. ft. within Pune city limits, will focus on advanced vehicle development, platform engineering, software solutions and sustainable mobility technologies. It complements the existing TCP setup at Chakan, taking the total engineering workforce to over 450 professionals working on India and global projects.

The expansion aligns with the Group’s ‘Make in India, for India and the world’ vision, with a sharper focus on localisation, quicker response to Indian consumer needs and improved scalability of engineering solutions. Positioned as the “Voice of India” within the global Volkswagen Group ecosystem, the enhanced R&D footprint is expected to play a key role in driving innovation while maintaining global standards of quality, safety and technology.

Mr. Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of SAVWIPL, said the Baner facility adds critical capacity in a dynamic urban location while building on the strong engineering base at Chakan. He added that the Technology Centre Pune will continue to expand its capabilities in areas such as digitalisation, automation and advanced safety technologies.

Since its inception in 2019, the Chakan-based TCP has been instrumental in developing India-focused products, including models such as the Volkswagen Taigun and Škoda Kushaq, as well as the Group’s sub-4-metre SUV, the Kylaq.
