Reayaj Mallick a dedicated mechanic at Northern Cargo Services (NCS), has spent five years ensuring that every vehicle leaving the garage is in top condition. Amidst his busy workdays, he shared his insights with Rajesh Rajgor, Associate Editor of Motorindia, highlighting the challenges and dedication required to keep commercial vehicles running smoothly.
In his role, Reayaj meticulously inspects and diagnoses issues in the vehicles, focusing on critical components like cylinder welding, leaf spring pins, and bushings. “We mostly work on the models currently in the market,” he explains, with a quiet confidence that comes from years of hands-on experience. His attention to detail is paramount, whether it’s addressing tyre or wiring wear and tear or tackling more complex mechanical problems. “If something is worn out, we replace it. Sometimes, if a problem persists, it leads to a repeat job,” he says, emphasizing the importance of thoroughness in his work.
The workshop at NCS is well-equipped, a reflection of the seriousness with which Reayaj and his team approach their responsibilities. “We have everything in-house, including a lathe machine, which is essential for precision work,” he notes. This ensures that every job is done to the highest standard, something he takes great pride in.
Fuel efficiency issues are a common challenge, with problems like fuel leaks or reduced mileage often traced back to faulty pumps or worn-out parts. “Drivers often face problems like fuel leaks or reduced mileage,” Reayaj observes, showcasing his deep understanding of the on-road challenges drivers encounter.
Leading a team of mechanics, Reayaj and his crew service around ten vehicles daily, handling everything from routine checks to complex repairs. His dedication extends to using only genuine spare parts, which he insists on for maintaining the fleet’s operational efficiency. “We always go for genuine parts because they best support the operational efficiency of the fleet,” he explains, highlighting the critical role quality parts play in vehicle performance.
What truly sets Reayaj apart is his passion for mechanical work. “I enjoy mechanical jobs the most because there’s always something new to learn,” he says, his enthusiasm for the craft shining through. This drive for continuous learning and improvement is what makes him a standout in his field.
For Reayaj , a good mechanic must always be eager to learn and solve problems critically. “A mechanic should always be eager to learn,” he advises, reflecting on his own journey of continuous growth. He stresses the importance of staying updated with new technologies, noting that today’s mechanics need a solid educational foundation, like a diploma or ITI certification, to succeed.
Despite his experience, Reayaj is constantly seeking new challenges. “I’m always looking to grow,” he admits, expressing a desire to broaden his expertise beyond trucks and buses to include four-wheelers and two-wheelers.
In his free time, he unwinds by watching YouTube or catching up with friends, but he never stops learning. “I keep an eye on the latest trends and try to learn from experienced people,” he says, embodying the mindset of a true professional who understands that staying updated is key to staying relevant.
