This midsize pick-up segment is changing fast, shifting from being purely a workhorse to something people also want for lifestyle and leisure.

Mahindra & Mahindra has given life to its Global Pik Up, which will soon hit Indian roads as the Mahindra Scorpio Lifestyler. In other countries, it’ll simply be called the Mahindra Lifestyler.
The story goes back to August 2023, when it was first shown as a concept in Cape Town, South Africa. Now, that concept is ready for production, marking a big step in Mahindra’s global journey. The Scorpio Lifestyler will be launched in India by April 2027, with prices starting below ₹19.79 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Scorpio Lifestyler was designed at Mahindra India Design Studio (MIDS) in Mumbai and developed at Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) in Chennai. Built on Mahindra’s next-generation body-on-frame architecture, it combines advanced technology, genuine off-road capability, and strong value, all shaped by feedback from customers across international markets, since it was built as a global product from day one.
In India, it marks the start of a new lifestyle pickup category, aimed at a new generation of customers who want both everyday usability and a sense of adventure.
A Global Bet, Built on Numbers
According to Dr. Velusamy R, President, Automotive Business, Mahindra & Mahindra, when lifestyle is blended into payload, the result is “playload.” That idea sits at the heart of a much bigger opportunity. Globally, the pickup market, big and midsize combined, stood at 6.2 million vehicles in 2025. Of this, 60% belongs to America’s large, full-size pickups, while the remaining 40% is spread across the rest of the world. Within that 40% lies a market of about 1.9 million midsize pickups, and that’s exactly where Mahindra wants to plant its flag, he said.

“This midsize segment is changing fast, shifting from being purely a workhorse to something people also want for lifestyle and leisure. Our team spotted this shift early through careful market research, and identified it as the sweet spot to build around. Backing this ambition is real experience, which is its 25 years of building pickups, sold across 35 countries. Behind the new global pickup sits a team of 850 engineers, over 260 patents already filed for its next-generation frame, and a design capable of carrying up to 6,300 kg of load. Add to that advanced safety technology, and the result is a vehicle built to offer both genuine capability and compelling value,” he pointed out.
A History of Betting Right
While the President of the company spoke of global numbers, Mr. Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra, turned the conversation back home. He said, “Every new Mahindra launch faces two questions: Is India ready for it? And is the segment big enough to matter?”
According to him, history has the answer. In 2002, SUVs weren’t even a proper segment in India. Then the Scorpio arrived and created one, a segment that today makes up two-thirds of the entire Indian car market. The next leap came in 2020. Off-roading was then a niche hobby for a passionate few, and many doubted the segment’s size when Mahindra launched the Thar. “The answer, as history shows, was a resounding ‘yes,’ the Thar became a lifestyle statement, a way for people to express who they were, on-road or off,” he explained.
History Repeating, Once Again
The CEO said the same thinking drives the new global pickup. In 2023, the segment was small in India, but as Indian lifestyles have evolved since, Mahindra now believes the country is ready for a genuine “playload” vehicle, functional through the week, built for weekend adventures too.
Surfboards, Kayaks, and a New Kind of Adventure
Citing fresh research, Mr. Gollagunta noted a boom in adventure experiences across India, from Mangaluru’s growing surf clubs to mountain rafting and kayaking trips. While still a relatively small segment, the key shift is that people now want to carry their own gear wherever they go, exactly the need this new vehicle is built to serve, he explained.
From the design standpoint, Mr. Pratap Bose, Chief Design and Creative Officer of the company, said the Lifestyler draws inspiration from how customers work, play, and explore, combining bold design, plush interiors, and SUV-like comfort with toughness.
Three Personalities, One Pickup
To showcase its range of character, Mahindra unveiled the Lifestyler in three distinct editions. The Valley Edition, finished in Artemis Grey, is designed for those balancing work and leisure, drawing inspiration from the layered hues of expansive estates. The Reef Edition, in an Aquareef finish inspired by shifting ocean shades, is built for those constantly drawn to the outdoors. The Trail Edition, finished in Sahara Beige and inspired by vast sandscapes, embodies the vehicle’s boldest, most adventurous, go-anywhere character.
Strategy for Global Markets
The Lifestyler is central to Mahindra’s global growth strategy, engineered from the outset to combine authentic pickup capability, global safety and engineering standards, advanced technology, premium design, and everyday versatility, backed by the company’s established pickup legacy in international markets. It will target the high-potential midsize lifestyle pickup segment across Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, wider Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America, Mr. Gollagunta added.
