SPAL Reinforces EV Focus with High-Performance Cooling Solutions

Ninan Philip, Director – Sales & Marketing, SPAL India

At the Passenger Vehicle Expo 2.0 in Chennai, SPAL Automotive Technology India made a strong statement with its debut participation, underscoring the company’s commitment to the growing electric mobility ecosystem. The Italian-origin brand, renowned for its high-performance fans, blowers, and pumps, showcased a range of advanced cooling solutions tailored for electric buses, trucks, off-highway machinery for HVAC, battery thermal management, and motor cooling.

“We decided to participate in PV Expo to deepen our presence in South India and connect directly with OEMs, fleet operators, and integrators,” said Ninan Philip, Director – Sales & Marketing at SPAL India. “The response here has been very encouraging.”

SPAL’s product line spans both brushed and brushless fans, catering to cost-sensitive customers as well as those seeking long-life, high-reliability components. Notably, its brushless offerings boast a life of up to 40,000 hours – essentially the lifespan of a commercial vehicle. Philip emphasised the shift in customer mindset: “Earlier the market was focused on upfront cost. Now, it values reliability and lifecycle performance.”

A key highlight was SPAL’s new range of coolant pumps designed specifically for EVs, offered in 300W, 650W, and 900W variants. “These pumps are vital for battery and traction motor cooling. While many players still rely on Chinese alternatives, we are gaining ground due to our superior performance and reliability,” Philip noted, adding that SPAL recently secured breakthrough orders from Switch Mobility and Ashok Leyland.

SPAL also unveiled high-voltage fans designed to operate directly at 600–800V, and also at 48V, eliminating the need for DC-DC converters and reducing energy consumption from Battery. SPAL received enquiries from a few Indian customers as well. Beyond buses, SPAL BLDC fans and Coolant Pumps are also integral to applications such as trucks, fuel cell vehicles, battery energy storage systems, refrigerated trucks, and off-highway machinery. The company’s dominance in the EV bus segment is evident, with over 90% market share in India for brushless fans.

Looking ahead, Philip sees strong opportunities in the passenger vehicle EV segment as well. “With OEMs like Maruti, Tata and Mahindra exploring BLDC fans, we believe the shift from brush to brushless is inevitable across categories.”

SPAL’s approach combines quality engineering with knowledge-sharing. “We don’t just sell products – we educate and support our customers on installation and maintenance, ensuring long-term performance,” he concluded.
