Munich Airport Electrifies Apron Bus Fleet with MAN Lion’s City E

A new era has begun at Munich Airport: AeroGround, the airport’s wholly owned ground handling subsidiary, is converting its entire apron bus fleet to fully electric MAN Lion’s City E vehicles. Over the coming years, up to 74 emission-free e-buses are set to enter service.

Boarding by eBus: In Munich, passengers take the electric bus to their flight.

To bring this transition to life, MAN Truck & Bus and Munich Airport have jointly launched a six-part social media series titled “Boarding by eBus”. The introductory episode is now live on the social media channels of both organisations.

At the centre of the campaign is Patrik, a highly motivated intern – affectionately dubbed the “Patrikant” – who explores the world of electric apron buses under the guidance of experienced AeroGround driver Franz. The contrast between the energetic Patrik and the composed Franz creates an engaging dynamic, offering viewers a behind-the-scenes look at airport operations while making electromobility more relatable.

Behind the light-hearted format lies a clear strategic intent. Munich Airport is targeting carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2035. The transition to MAN Lion’s City E buses forms a central pillar of this roadmap. Already, 37 electric apron buses are in operation, with the fleet expected to scale up to 74 vehicles transporting passengers, crew members and airport staff.

Where diesel engines once dominated, quiet electric buses now operate across the apron – delivering benefits in terms of emissions reduction, passenger comfort and improved working conditions for staff.

The campaign also addresses a broader industry challenge: driver shortage. Through “Boarding by eBus”, MAN and Munich Airport position the role of a bus driver as a modern, responsible and future-ready profession. Operating a state-of-the-art 12-metre electric bus in a complex airport environment is showcased as both demanding and rewarding.

Following the introductory episode, the remaining five episodes will delve deeper into operations – from charging via CCS connectors and interactions with AeroGround experts to Patrik’s journey towards taking the wheel himself. The series also highlights key features such as vehicle functionality, driver assistance systems and the unique operational requirements of running electric buses in an airport ecosystem.
