Since its inception in 1930, Lucas Indian Service Limited (LIS) has embodied the ethos of being a “service-first” company. Over the decades, LIS has evolved into a trusted partner for the entire automotive aftermarket ecosystem – including mechanics, technicians, retailers, dealers, distributors, institutional customers, and its dedicated employees.

With a pan-India presence spanning all 800 districts, LIS operates through its network of branches, workshops, associates, dealers, and service partners. This deep-rooted presence enables LIS to deliver high-quality, technologically advanced parts and systems, along with dependable service that brings value to both vehicle owners and fleet operators.

LIS’s diverse product portfolio includes auto electrical systems, fuel injection systems, wiper systems, filtration systems, automotive lighting, batteries, lubricants, and other critical consumables. These offerings cater to a wide range of vehicle platforms, from legacy models to the latest electric and hybrid variants.
The Challenge: A Shifting Technological Landscape
With tightening emission norms, increased environmental awareness, and the rapid adoption of new-generation powertrains—including EVs – the automotive repair and service landscape is undergoing a fundamental shift. Independent Aftermarket (IAM) mechanics and technicians now face the daunting task of servicing multi-generational vehicle technologies, often without access to updated technical information, diagnostic tools, or formal training.
This growing skills gap poses a significant challenge to livelihoods and service quality—especially for grassroots mechanics who form the backbone of the IAM.
The Response: LIS Unnati – A CSR Initiative with Impact
To address this critical need, LIS launched ‘LIS Unnati’, a nationwide CSR initiative aimed at skilling, upskilling, and empowering IAM mechanics and rural youth.
At the heart of LIS Unnati is a simple yet powerful belief: mechanics are ‘Jodidars’ – partners in progress. The initiative strives to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in a rapidly transforming automotive ecosystem.
Strategic Partnerships for Sustainable Skill Development
To deliver meaningful outcomes, LIS has forged strong institutional partnerships:
- MoU with Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC):
Since March 2025, LIS has collaborated with ASDC to roll out certified training programs for IAM mechanics. Conducted by accredited trainers across Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, these sessions have already benefitted over 200 mechanics, with more programs in the pipeline. - MoU with National Instructional Media Institute (NIMI):
LIS is also working with NIMI (under the Government of India) to design, develop, and distribute updated technical textbooks for Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across India. These books – published in English, Hindi, Tamil, and other regional languages – aim to prepare India’s rural youth for the future of automotive service.
LIS Academy: The Knowledge Backbone
To anchor this initiative, LIS Academy serves as a hybrid platform – both digital and physical – focused on skill development, technical knowledge dissemination, and industry collaboration. The academy works closely with ASDC, NIMI, ITIs, and other ecosystem players to ensure the relevance and reach of LIS Unnati.
Gratitude and Commitment
LIS expresses its heartfelt appreciation to ASDC, NIMI, ITI faculty, and industry peers for their unwavering support. Their collaboration reinforces LIS’s conviction that LIS Unnati can significantly uplift the automotive service ecosystem by:
- Bridging the skill gap
- Creating sustainable livelihoods
- Enhancing service quality in the IAM sector
In doing so, LIS continues its legacy of service – not just to vehicles, but to the people who keep them running.
