Hyundai Launches Usage-Based Insurance for Bluelink Customers

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) today announced Usage-Based Insurance (UBI) for eligible Bluelink customers, allowing safer drivers to receive additional insurance benefits. Powered by HMIL’s connected-car technology, the programme gives customers a personalised driving score and a consent-based route to savings on insurance premiums.

The idea is simple; customers who drive safely should be able to benefit through lower insurance premiums. Using HMIL’s Bluelink technology, eligible customers will receive a UBI score based on their vehicle usage and driving behaviour. Participating insurance companies will use this score for underwriting and offer savings at the time of renewal. Hyundai India Insurance Broking (HIIB) will act as the intermediary between HMIL and the insurers, sharing customer-consented driving scores and enabling access to personalised insurance benefits.

Mr. Tarun Garg, MD & CEO, HMIL, said, “Hyundai Motor India’s connected car ecosystem continues to witness strong growth, with over 0.8 million connected cars already on Indian roads, a target of 1 million cumulative connected car sales by 2027 and an ambition to reach 2 million connected car sales by 2030 through its Bluelink platform. Leveraging this expanding connected-car ecosystem, the Usage-Based Insurance (UBI) program extends the value of connected mobility beyond convenience and safety by rewarding responsible driving with personalized insurance benefits. In certain cases, customers may save up to 15% (basis insurers underwriting rules) on the own-damage component of their insurance premium, making vehicle ownership safer, smarter and more rewarding.”

The driving score uses data generated directly by the vehicle through the Bluelink platform, so customers do not need any additional devices or installations. It is calculated from driving behaviour recorded over the previous three months and assesses key indicators such as driving dynamics, including rapid acceleration, rapid deceleration and hard braking, along with speed control and idling behaviour.

Customers whose insurance renewal is due within the next 90 days will be able to view their score and explore potential benefits. The score can be tracked in the Bluelink app. A score of 70 or above may unlock insurance benefits, subject to the underwriting policy and terms and conditions of the participating insurer. Customers below the threshold can improve their score through personalised driving tips and may be rewarded for adopting safer driving habits.

Hyundai says the approach allows a more complete assessment of driving behaviour than traditional insurance models and supports a personalised insurance experience that recognises responsible driving.
