Founded in 1965 in Delhi by Amarjeet Singh, Harnam Automobiles has grown into a cornerstone of India’s European car parts market. Relocating to Chennai in 1985 to better serve its South Indian clientele, the company became one of India’s first importers of European auto components, ultimately earning the reputation as the No. 1 European car parts dealer in South India.

Today, under the leadership of Mr. Sahib Singh, the second-generation business supplies rare and essential parts for luxury brands, including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Jaguar, and Land Rover, to a network of over 500 independent workshops.
Capitalizing on the Aftermarket Boom
As the automotive aftermarket evolves, Harnam Automobiles is experiencing significant growth. With vehicle warranties expiring, more customers are turning to independent, well-equipped workshops for cost-effective servicing. To meet this demand, the company recently partnered with the SMP Group to launch SMP Harnam, expanding their reach into B2B distribution while maintaining their strong retail presence.
“Aftermarket demand is increasing rapidly now because the warranty periods are over for many cars. The supply from OEMs is not always good and pricing is high, so they come to us for competitive prices. The demand is huge,” shared Sahib Singh, Managing Director, Harnam Automobiles.
Empowering Mechanics and Combating Counterfeits
A major factor in Harnam’s success is its deep relationship with local mechanics. By leveraging digital portals, precise chassis-decoding software, and modern diagnostic tools, Harnam ensures that mechanics get the exact parts they need. To meet the unique needs of its customers, the company sources specialised components directly from trusted suppliers in the UK, USA, and Germany, often importing these items in under a week. They also back their network with loyalty programs and a range of pricing options.

“We understand the mechanics’ problems and can supply everything from a single screw to a full assembly unit. Most importantly, we give them a warranty for every part, so they don’t have to worry,” he said.
In an industry plagued by white-label Chinese imports and counterfeit parts, especially in Northern India, Harnam Automobiles relies on a strict sourcing strategy. By purchasing directly from authorized agents, they guarantee the authenticity of their inventory.
“Counterfeit problems have been there for a long time, but we don’t get into that sector at all. We are buying from agents directly. That trust has been built with our customers for the last 65 years,” he explained.
A Trusted Hub for Classic Car Enthusiasts
Beyond modern B2B workshop supply, Harnam Automobiles has built a legacy rooted in a deep understanding of classic European vehicles. The company is a trusted destination for car enthusiasts, collectors, and proud vintage car owners. Specializing in iconic models such as the Land Rover Defender, Mercedes-Benz W115, W123, and W124, as well as the legendary Volkswagen Beetle, Harnam maintains an extensive stock to keep these timeless machines alive on Indian roads. Whether it is a rare restoration project or routine maintenance, generations of automobile lovers rely on the company’s hands-on expertise and dependable service.
Navigating EV Transitions and Consumer Trends
While the industry at large is pushing toward electric vehicles (EVs), Harnam Automobiles remains confident in its niche. European car owners remain deeply passionate about the traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) driving experience. Furthermore, Harnam is adapting to changing consumer habits by introducing a sustainable used-parts market, salvaging components from insurance write-offs to offer affordable alternatives without compromising utility.

“Because of the passion our customers have, they will not easily give up the drive of an ICE vehicle. For at least the next 10 to 15 years, there will be a huge aftermarket demand, so it will not affect our business much,” he stated.
Thriving in a Mature Market and Strategic Expansion
Operating primarily out of Chennai has proven to be a strategic advantage for Harnam. The local automotive culture values durability, authenticity, and premium service, perfectly aligning with the company’s core offerings.
“Chennai is a highly matured and educated buyers market. Our customer knows the value of an original part and the value of the product, which has really helped us grow here over the last 45 years,” he shared.
Driven by this vision for growth, Harnam Automobiles has recently expanded its geographical footprint by opening a new branch in the vibrant and historic city of Amritsar. The expansion reflects the company’s belief in the growing enthusiasm among Punjabi car lovers, many of whom share a deep passion for maintaining and restoring classic and luxury European vehicles.
