Markus Wittig, the Global Head of Business Line Passenger Car at ZF Aftermarket, recently shared insights into ZF’s commitment to strengthening its presence in the Indian aftermarket sector. As the automotive landscape in India continues to evolve rapidly, ZF is focusing on providing the latest technologies, high-quality parts, and modern service solutions to meet the needs of both passenger and commercial vehicle owners. Through strategic investments in infrastructure, workshops, and training, ZF is not only aiming to enhance the service quality but also to equip local technicians with the skills to manage advanced automotive systems.

ZF [pro] Tech plus: A Flagship for India’s Aftermarket Transformation
A critical milestone in ZF’s journey in India was the launch of the ZF [pro]Tech plus workshop in New Delhi. This marks the company’s first foray into the Indian market with a premium service model designed to set new standards in vehicle maintenance. “We believe it was the right time to introduce something that showcases how a professional workshop should look and function,” Markus explains. ZF’s decision to partner with the right local stakeholders is crucial to ensure the success and growth of these initiatives.
The ZF [pro]Tech plus workshop in Delhi is not just a service center but a model for what future workshops in India should aim to achieve. It is equipped with the latest diagnostic tools and offers advanced training to local technicians. “It’s important to ensure that workshops are equipped with the right tools and that mechanics receive proper training to handle the complex systems found in modern vehicles,” Markus emphasizes.

India’s Growing Demand for Advanced Aftermarket Solutions
According to Markus, the rise in modern vehicles equipped with the latest technologies is driving significant changes in the aftermarket sector. The Indian market, which has seen rapid adoption of new vehicle technologies, poses unique challenges for workshops. As Markus highlights, “In India, the pace of technological change in vehicles is faster than in many other markets. This acceleration presents a significant challenge for workshops, especially when it comes to diagnostics and recalibration of electronic systems.” Modern vehicles often include features like sensors and cameras that require advanced diagnostic tools and calibration systems, demanding a higher level of expertise from technicians.
India’s rapid infrastructure development also plays a pivotal role in fuelling this growth. Markus points out the expansion of key roadways like the Mumbai-Pune highway, which is creating more opportunities for car use, ultimately benefiting the aftermarket industry.

“With better infrastructure and more people using cars, there’s a tremendous business opportunity for the aftermarket, provided that businesses adapt to the changing landscape,” Markus adds. To address this gap, ZF has focused heavily on training and technical support. Markus explains, “Training is key. Whether it’s hands-on or through online modules, we ensure that our technicians can handle even the most sophisticated systems.” In addition to traditional mechanical repairs, ZF is also providing specialized training for electric vehicle (EV) maintenance, which is a rapidly growing segment in India. “As EVs make their way onto Indian roads, it’s essential for workshops to be equipped with the knowledge to repair and service these vehicles,” Markus remarks.

Expanding the Workshop Network: Quality Over Quantity
The next phase of ZF’s growth in India involves expanding the ZF [pro]Tech network to other regions, following the success of the flagship workshop in Delhi. Markus emphasizes the importance of focusing on quality over quantity when selecting partners. “We want to make sure that every workshop we partner with meets our high standards. It’s about providing excellent service, not just expanding for the sake of numbers,” he says.

The expansion of ZF’s distributor network, which is set to cover 250 cities across India, will play a crucial role in supporting this growth. As Markus notes, “You can’t have a successful workshop network without a solid distribution network. We’re aligning our workshop expansion with our distributor network to ensure that the right products are available to our partners.”
ZF’s commitment to local manufacturing in India further underscores its dedication to meeting the specific needs of the market. By manufacturing components such as shock absorbers and clutches in India, ZF is not only reducing lead times but also ensuring that the products are tailored to the unique requirements of Indian vehicles. This focus on local production is essential for maintaining a competitive edge in India’s aftermarket sector.
Keeping Workshops Up-to-Date with Technological Advancements
As automotive technology continues to evolve, ZF’s strategy to keep its workshop partners up-to-date is clear: continuous training and access to cutting-edge diagnostic tools. “We bring the latest technological advancements from our R&D division and share that knowledge with our workshop partners,” Markus states. This proactive approach ensures that ZF’s partners are always equipped to handle the most advanced vehicle systems, from mechanical components to electric drivetrains.
ZF’s deep expertise in both mechanical and electronic vehicle systems gives the company a unique advantage. “Having access to the latest information on vehicle systems allows us to anticipate future trends and prepare our partners for the challenges ahead,” Markus says. This knowledge-sharing approach is vital in a rapidly changing automotive landscape, especially in a country like India, where the adoption of new technologies is accelerating.
Shifting Dynamics in the Indian Aftermarket Landscape
“The Indian aftermarket and distribution landscape are undergoing significant changes,” says Markus Wittig. He highlights that, in the past, the number of vehicle models on the road was limited, which meant that distributors only had to manage a small range of part numbers. However, technological advancements and the introduction of a wide variety of vehicle models have drastically changed the dynamics.
“With so many different vehicle models on the road now, the need for a broader range of parts has grown. ZF’s strategy is to ensure that distributors have access to a comprehensive range of products,” he explains. As part of this strategy, ZF provides approximately 30 to 35% of what a typical workshop requires, covering essential components like shock absorbers, braking systems, clutches, and transmission parts.
This move has positioned ZF as a key supplier for major distributors in India. But it’s not just about providing a range of products. Markus emphasizes the importance of ensuring that these products are installed correctly, a step that ZF supports through comprehensive training for mechanics and workshops.
“Mechanics need to know how to identify and install products properly. If workshops are to maintain customer trust, they must avoid product failures that could lead to returns,” Markus stresses. ZF’s [pro]Tech plus workshops and training initiatives are designed to ensure that products are installed to the highest standards, contributing to customer satisfaction and safety.
When it comes to the aftermarket, trust is paramount. Markus believes that ZF’s strong brand reputation is built on providing high-quality, reliable products. “In India, car owners invest a significant amount of money in their vehicles, and they need to trust their workshops. Workshops, in turn, must be able to repair vehicles to a high standard,” he says.
ZF places a strong emphasis on the safety and reliability of its parts, particularly those related to critical functions like braking and chassis components. “Safety is a key concern for us. We supply products that meet the highest safety standards, ensuring that drivers are protected during emergency braking situations or accidents,” Markus highlights. This commitment to quality and safety is at the core of ZF’s approach to the Indian market.
Addressing Opportunities in the Growing Indian Market
India presents numerous opportunities for growth in the automotive aftermarket. As the country’s infrastructure develops and more vehicles with advanced technology enter the market, ZF sees ample potential for expansion.
“There is a tremendous opportunity for aftermarket businesses in India, particularly with the rapid development of the market. The demand for spare parts and maintenance services is growing, especially as more people shift from two-wheelers to cars,” Markus shares. He also points out that the rising number of modern vehicles on the road has created new demand for aftermarket products, especially those related to the latest automotive technologies.
ZF has been in India for over 20 years and is focused on expanding its presence. Markus explains, “Now is the right time to expand our workshop concept. We’re investing in local teams, including sales and technical staff, to support distributors and workshops, while introducing more products from SACHS, LEMFÖRDER, and TRW.” This growth will strengthen the aftermarket sector, with Markus emphasizing, “We’re committed to investing in our team and expanding our distribution network.”
A Commitment to Quality and Sustainability
Looking ahead, ZF has ambitious plans for the Indian aftermarket. “India is one of our strategic markets, and we intend to expand our presence further. We want to provide more products for the Indian market and step by step increase our share of the aftermarket,” Markus says.
To achieve this, ZF aims to work closely with distributors and develop long-term partnerships. “By expanding our distributor network and offering a broader range of products, we aim to be a key player in India’s aftermarket business,” he concludes.
Despite the challenges, Markus is optimistic about the future. He compares the development of the Indian market to the journey ZF has had in Europe, particularly in Germany, where it took time to build relationships and educate workshops. “In Europe, it took time to expand and educate workshops, and the same will be true for India. But we believe now is the right time to accelerate our growth in India,” he reflects.
Markus’ final words emphasize ZF’s commitment to quality, sustainability, and long-term growth in India. “Investing in quality parts is essential. You don’t want to spend money twice. By investing in high-quality products now, you can ensure peace of mind for years to come,” he concludes.
As ZF continues to expand its footprint in India, the company’s commitment to providing high-quality, reliable products and supporting workshops with comprehensive training and resources will play a key role in shaping the future of the Indian automotive aftermarket. With a clear vision and strategic investments, ZF is poised to remain a trusted partner for customers in India for years to come.
