Celebrating 100 years of innovation, the company showcased its latest advancements in air suspension systems, mid-axles, and tag axles. The spotlight was on their cutting-edge MBS Omega system, designed for 9-ton and 10-ton trailer axles. During an exclusive interview with N. Balasubramanian, Erwin Verweij, Business Development Manager, VDL Weweler, shared key insights, shedding light on the company’s innovations, global market outlook, and its ambitions for the Indian market.
Driving Innovation: MBS Omega and Beyond
At the heart of VDL Weweler’s display was the MBS Omega, an air suspension system that Verweij proudly described as “the lightest spring-steel system on the market.” He elaborated, “This system is made entirely of forged parts, allowing us greater design flexibility to reduce material weight without compromising strength.” The MBS Omega exemplifies the company’s commitment to delivering robust yet lightweight solutions that enhance vehicle efficiency.
In addition to the MBS Omega, VDL Weweler showcased its capabilities in mid-axles and tag axles, catering to truck and bus OEMs. These components, available in steered and non-steered versions, offer significant advantages for diverse applications. “There’s a lot of interest in these solutions, especially for their versatility in handling various load conditions,” Verweij noted.
Exploring Sustainability: Regenerative Axle Technology
One of the most talked-about innovations at the VDL Weweler booth was their collaboration with Ecology, a regenerative axle technology. “This axle not only generates electricity but also enables the trailer to be driven, offering a sustainable edge to our solutions,” Verweij shared. The integration of such technology underscores VDL Weweler’s focus on environmentally conscious engineering.
The company’s centennial celebration at the event also drew attention, with Verweij expressing gratitude for the overwhelming response. “Celebrating 100 years with our customers at IAA has been incredible. It’s a milestone that few companies achieve, and it speaks to our enduring commitment to quality and innovation,” he remarked.
Strategic Growth: Focus on India and Asia
Verweij acknowledged the booming Indian market, stating, “It’s about time to step in because it’s really starting to fly. We are exploring collaboration possibilities in India with existing VDL Weweler partners and VDL Group partners.
Recognizing India’s unique challenges, Verweij emphasized the importance of tailoring solutions to local conditions. “Indian roads present specific problems, and we’ve learned from past experiences that simply adding heavier steel isn’t the answer. Instead, we focus on designing systems that are both robust and lightweight, ensuring durability without sacrificing efficiency,” he explained.
Looking ahead, VDL Weweler supports the local mindset. “I would like to buy parts in India, assemble them locally, and create solutions tailored for this market. It’s the first step towards establishing a stronger presence in India,” Verweij revealed.
Outlook for 2025 and Beyond
Globally, 2024 presented challenges, with Verweij noting a “Stable turnover”. Being optimistic about 2025 Turnover . “By the end of 2025, our goal is to offer a full solution for the Indian market at a competitive price point—one that customers can trust to be 100% reliable,” he asserted.
