Arun Ganpat Rajapkar has been a cornerstone at Reema Transport Pvt Ltd (RTPL) for over 12 years, quietly mastering the art of truck maintenance. A key player in a company renowned for its 41 years in ambient and cold chain logistics, Arun’s calm demeanor and expert knowledge of modern technology might surprise those who picture mechanics as simply grease-stained and rough around the edges. Arun is not just a mechanic; he’s a bridge between old-school hands-on expertise and the cutting-edge technology that now defines the commercial vehicle world, writes Rajesh Rajgor.
Every day, Arun services around 4 to 5 trucks – a significant feat given the size and complexity of these machines. His responsibilities span from basic oil checks to advanced diagnostic procedures. “It all starts with a thorough check-up,” he explains. We have a checklist, and we go through it methodically: joints, cross brakes, settings—nothing can be overlooked.”
His routine tasks could vary from performing simple oil changes and tyre checks to resolving complex issues like replacing worn brake pads, fixing a faulty battery that caused flickering lights, and repairing a leaking engine gasket, all of which ensure that the trucks are safe and ready for the road.
Arun’s work reflects the evolution of the transportation industry. Truck maintenance is no longer just about greasing parts and tightening screws; it requires a deep understanding of electronic systems. “A lot of issues now are electronic. Sensors play a big role in these trucks, and when something goes wrong, you can’t just open the hood and fix it. That’s where the laptop comes in,” he says with a proud smile. Using diagnostic tools has become second nature to him. “The system shows us the problem, and we solve it.”
His journey to mastering this blend of mechanical work and technology didn’t happen overnight. Arun admits there was a learning curve, but he tackled it with curiosity and persistence. “I use the internet a lot. YouTube is great for learning new things apart from senior supervisors and peers. Sometimes, I find solutions to problems I didn’t even know existed. YouTube and WhatsApp—they’re my go-to tools for keeping up with the latest technologies in truck repairs,” he shares.
However, what truly sets Arun apart is his ability to balance technology with the human touch. “We work as a team, dividing tasks like tyre checks, oil levels, and battery management. Everyone has their role. Safety regulations are strict, especially now. We ensure that the truck is safe, the sensors are working, and the driver’s safety protocols are in place,” he explains, embodying a strong sense of responsibility. We have to be organized, especially when there’s a rush,” he emphasizes, showcasing his collaborative spirit.
In his downtime, Arun enjoys a simple life. “When I’m not working, I like to watch the news or listen to music on YouTube,” he says, noting how the internet, which plays a significant role in his professional life, also serves as a source of relaxation.
Despite the rapid technological advancements in his line of work, Arun remains humble and focused on the basics. “At the end of the day, it’s about solving problems, whether with a wrench or a laptop,” he reflects. His approach may have changed over the years, but the dedication he brings to his job remains steadfast. He’s not only a problem solver for trucks but also for the people who rely on them.
In a world where trucks are becoming smarter, it’s mechanics like Arun—who blend skill with a thirst for knowledge—who are quietly keeping the wheels of the industry turning. His commitment to maintaining RTPL’s high standards in transportation logistics reflects the essence of a true professional in a rapidly evolving field.
